Swipe FOCUS Happy Valley Honey

Happy Valley Honey is a producer of natural honey, with product ranges of “tasting honey”, “health and wellbeing”, and “skin care”. They have been in existence for over 35 years. It is based in Drury, New Zealand under the Lipscombe and Harvey families.

So let's meet Happy Valley Honey, who spoke to us about their business.

How did it all begin?

The whole enterprise started in 1975 in South Auckland, with Ben Rawnsley, who was a Beekeeper, and his wife, Dot. What started as a hobby quickly grew to a successful local retail business. Today we produce over 50 products, export to over 15 countries and have a busy retail store and online shop selling worldwide.

What drives you each day?

Providing natural honey and bee products (made with little human influence) is our passion, so we work hard to ensure that. Additionally, we have a highly focused vision: “20/20”. We want a business with a 20 million turnover by 2020, which keeps us driven. It is crucial to have an idea of where you see your business or you cannot succeed. Our passion and vision both keep us very motivated.

The CyberCom Pay factor..

Swipe has enabled to us to grow our online business by 100% over the past 12 months. We can now offer international customers a reliable payment gateway, and have the trust in CyberCom Pay to help us identify potential fraudulent transactions before we ship the goods. This means we can offer our customers faster delivery services and sell into new markets without the risk, all while being offered competitive service fees and lower transaction fees.

Words of wisdom for your fellow SME’s?

Having now run a business for a while, there are some things we have learned and try to remain true to. The first of these is making sure the product is of excellent quality and true to label. You cannot run a business on bad-quality products! You must give your clients good products, or they will not return. You have to identify what you offer (and how), understand the nitty-gritty details that set you apart, and develop them to stay true to your brand. Customers will identify with your brand and appreciate your products.

Secondly, and most importantly, look after your customers. They come to you for a reason. Give them reasons to stay, not leave. Ensure they receive what they want and a little extra. They will appreciate you and your business more. Finally, pass on knowledge as people love to know what the product is. Advertise, talk to people, and explain what you offer. It will have a good impact on your business, help people connect with you, and bring new customers to you.
